This is a video on the topic of politics. I wanted most of all to say today that I care about all people in the world. For the sake of this video we are going to focus on all people in the United States.
If I care about all people, does that make me a moderate? If I care about understanding everyone’s opinion, does that make me a moderate? My hope is that promoting that attitude will make the world a better place.
But let me tell you, I’ve been asking for people’s opinions, and the process has been challenging. Some people have not thought out their opinions very well. Others have a very hard time clearly describing them, to the extent that even after multiple follow up questions I am not quite sure what they are trying to say.
Some people use a technique similar to the Gish gallop where they overwhelm the conversation with a high number of items that they bring up that can never be addressed in the time we have available. It is not quite the same as a Gish gallop because their intention is not always to use false information, but that happens often too.
I’m glad people talk to me though, and I’m not trying to judge them, I just think it’s important that we talk about what YOU will find if you agree with me and want to go down this path. You can’t think of it as going into a situation and coming out a winner. That will never happen. Your goal should be to give people a positive experience with you, and that does not require you to agree with them or to say that they are right.
A big part of this process is not about them, it’s about you. You are learning to have a conversation about truly hot topics without it ruining your day. I say learning, because you are going to have to learn just like I am learning. It is truly difficult, this is not a baby task. But, I will help you through it as I learn, and quite honestly, we’re just going to have to see what happens. There are too many unknowns for us to be able to predict anything.
